The Bloodhound Breed
The bloodhound is one of the oldest scent tracking breeds. They are very friendly, affectionate, and loyal. They are commonly used in law enforcement because they have proven to be tireless workers. Bloodhounds tracking ability's are so accurate that evidence tracked by a bloodhound can be accepted in a court of law. While they have been known to track people they are also excellent hunting dogs.
It is misunderstood that the bloodhound is named this because it can smell the blood of what it is tracking. Really this is in reference to the fact that early on the breeders went to great lengths to keep the bloodlines pure so they were known as "Blooded Hounds" which is now the Bloodhound.
The first specimens of this breed are known to come from Constantinople and became a very popular breed for hunting in Europe.
Bloodhounds come in three different colors Red, Black and Tan, and Liver and Tan. A small amount of white is acceptable on the chest, feet, or tip of tail.
They are a large breed of dog and can weigh as much as 120 pounds and can be up to 27" tall.
While the bloodhound is loyal, affectionate, and eager to please they can also be take-charge kind of dogs so it is important that it is clear who is boss in the house with kind but firm handling.
Because Bloodhound are natural trackers it is best to keep them on a leash while out walking and in a fenced yard or large kennel run. While the breed has a reputation as being a lazy porch dog this is far from the truth. They are actually highly energetic and love to run and play so need room to exercise. Games like fetch and hide and seek are highly entertaining for them.
Like many large breeds bloodhound can be susceptible to early arthritis and bloat.
If you have never owned a bloodhound I would strongly suggest that you thourghly research the breed before making a decision to add one to your family.
